em28xx driver usb issue, passing old VCRs to mp4

Hello guys,

I am passing old VCRs I have recorded with a bunch of stuff, to mp4's.

Last year I was doing this with an old Compaq laptop I had for a while, but which I gave away as a present to the daughter of my friend, so it's gone.

I am trying to do this now on my PC, and I can't get the thing to work,
If I plug the device (it's a typhoon video to USB converter), to any BLUE USB ports, the device is not even seen, (nothing even appears in the logs).
When plugging it into the standard USB 2.0 ports I see the following messages:
Code:
Mar 07 13:16:37 nova kernel: usb 1-4: new high-speed USB device number 86 using ehci-pci
Mar 07 13:16:37 nova kernel: usb 3-4: new full-speed USB device number 3 using ohci-pci
Mar 07 13:16:37 nova kernel: usb 3-4: not running at top speed; connect to a high speed hub
Mar 07 13:16:37 nova kernel: usb 3-4: New USB device found, idVendor=eb1a, idProduct=2863
Mar 07 13:16:37 nova kernel: usb 3-4: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=0, SerialNumber=0
Mar 07 13:16:37 nova kernel: em28xx: New device   @ 12 Mbps (eb1a:2863, interface 0, class 0)
Mar 07 13:16:37 nova kernel: em28xx: Device initialization failed.
Mar 07 13:16:37 nova kernel: em28xx: Device must be connected to a high-speed USB 2.0 port.
Mar 07 13:16:37 nova mtp-probe[2468]: checking bus 3, device 3: "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:12.0/usb3/3-4"
Mar 07 13:16:37 nova mtp-probe[2468]: bus: 3, device: 3 was not an MTP device
I tried 3 different laptops with the same result, I tried a mini-pc running Debian, and very little happens, thinks it's a bluetooth device LOL.

At this point, I am at a loss.
I remember in the compaq it used to work, and I used "tvtime" to view the feed, and mencoder tv:// ..... to rip the feed.

Any ideas ?

Some dude in Ubuntu:
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1376057

had the same issue, and he solved it by blacklisting uhci_hcd

any ideas if that would work in Fedora and how ?

Re: em28xx driver usb issue, passing old VCRs to mp4

UPDATE:
I went into the BIOS, and disabled Legacy USB support, and just left USB2.0 and 3.0 as Enabled (not Auto)
rebooted,
same thing.

then I added blacklist ohci-pci , ohci_pci , into /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
and also added rd.driver.blacklist=ohci-pci into the grub CMD_LINE, and recreated with grub2-mkconfig
rebooted

same thing. It somehow keeps switching into ohci-pci (I guess that means USB 1.1 "Full Speed"), instead of staying in USB 2.0 "High Speed".

will continue plugging.....

Oh, if I plug the device into a USB-3.0 blue port, and then try an "usbview" or "usb-devices" command, they just hang.

Re: em28xx driver usb issue, passing old VCRs to mp4

I guess my connundrum orbits around the question of how to "disable" the USB1.0 driver in the kernel, i.e. the "ohci".
Which I haven't yet found the solution to.

rd.driver.blacklist=ohci-pci
Kind of hard to blacklist a kernel module that doesn't exist in F25 kernels. It's not even compiled in.
Code:
 $ sudo grep -i ohci /boot/config-4.9.13-200.fc25.x86_64
CONFIG_FIREWIRE_OHCI=m
CONFIG_USB_OHCI_LITTLE_ENDIAN=y
CONFIG_USB_OHCI_HCD=y
CONFIG_USB_OHCI_HCD_PCI=y
# CONFIG_USB_OHCI_HCD_PLATFORM is not set
CONFIG_PROVIDE_OHCI1394_DMA_INIT=y

LOL, sooo, you reckon if I change this:
CONFIG_USB_OHCI_HCD=y
CONFIG_USB_OHCI_HCD_PCI=y

to this:
CONFIG_USB_OHCI_HCD=n
CONFIG_USB_OHCI_HCD_PCI=n

and reboot, it may work ? , or am I so far gone that I just need to open another beer ?

No, you seem to be "a goner" on this one.

OK then, I'll just open another beer.

On another note, I remember that the USB cable last year was just cuddled up between the Video Grabber device and my old Compaq, but nowadays it's passing through all sorts of conduits filled with RFI/EMI sources, I will try to reroute the cable while I down some beers, and see what happens.
