LAptop does not resume after hibernate/suspend

I have a Dell precision M6500 with an NVIDA G92GLM aka Quadro FX2800M. running Fedora 24 with a nouveau driver. The issue I have is that when I suspend the laptop or when it runs low on battery and I resume it the screen stays dark, not black but dark like the disply is not powered. This was already the case when it was running F22 and F23.

I'm not running Gnome nor do I want to, I'm a cinnamon user.

The only thing I can do is press the powerbutton for 10 sec and reboot. It is completely unresponsive.

Does anybody have any links where I can find a solution? I do not seem to be able to find anything with google.

I cannot use the NVIDIA Driver as the FX2800M is not supported with the nividia drivers in F24.

Kind regards

Erwin

Question,

after "supposedly resuming", if you press CTRL-ALT-F2 , do you get a console login ?
have you checked with your xscreensaver ? (disable it if you can , just to check if its not that)
also in your Power Management, "uncheck" the Lock Screen on Sleep.

I get nothing; And as I said it is completely unresponsive.

The display does not look black like when it on but rather greenish like it looks when the laptop is powered of.
I cannot press Control Alt F2 or anything not even ctrl-alt-del works

Re: LAptop does not resume after hibernate/suspend

update:
I can login using ssh from an other system and when I look at
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/actual_brightness it says 3

This is the same as when it is running after a reboot

kernel version is 4.9.13-100.fc24.x86_64

I'm stumped here.

Re: LAptop does not resume after hibernate/suspend

Question,

if you ssh in, then do a telinit 3, and subsequent telinit 5, does the screen turn itself back on ?

can you also get a copy of /var/log/Xorg.0.log while it is "in zombie mode" and post it here ?
a copy f dmesg may also be cool.

Re: LAptop does not resume after hibernate/suspend

Hello,

I will test this later, I've been trying to get the Nvidia drivers to work since there was a newer version since my last try (340.102), but it did not work.

The installer can't register or load one of the modules, but that is an other story. Anyway I really appreciate the help.

Thanks

Re: LAptop does not resume after hibernate/suspend

I tried this: telinit 3 && telinit 5:
and after this the screen started blinking off and on and it has a white cursor in the top left hand side of the screen.

netwoking is also not working after this so I can not get the dmesg and Xorg.0.log

Hello Erwin,

By googling, I found the following data about your laptop:
http://www.dell.com/downloads/global...spec-sheet.pdf

And there, the following detail cot my eye:
Quote:
Processors Intel® Core™ i7 Extreme Edition Quad-Core, Core i7 Quad-Core or the Core i7 & i5 Dual-Core Processors
Chipset Mobile Intel PM55 Chipset
From that I found the following:
http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel_...5_Express.html

And what I can tell from the CPU used (all 45/32nm, Nehalem architecture based), your Dell is at least 7 years old.

All of them have C0, C1, C3 and C6 PM CPU states. And Quatro2800M is also released at the same/close by time.

For the starters, I would suggest to remove Nouveau driver and replace it with proprietary NVIDIA one, suitable for this GFX card. This might work...

And... Yes, Xorg.0.log log as well as dmesg log (journalctl -b -1 for the latest previous one is most wanted here, one which fails upon resume) is more than desired/wanted, in this/your case.

Re: LAptop does not resume after hibernate/suspend

I've attached the Xorg.0.log and the dmesg (journalctl -b -1) output

I tried installing the NVIDIA Drivers over the weekend using the if not true then false guide.

It failed stating that it could not load a module. I guess that my system being upgraded from F22 to F23 to F24 will need to be reinstalled fresh as I need to do a full clean as well.

The system is the one with the I5 processor. I do not think that the fact that it is almost 7 years old is really relevant here. I have other systems that are both younger and older that do not have these issues. Typically these precision systems are the ones that Dell selects to release also with a Linux preinstalled version.

On my first coffee of the morning, resetting brain, so could you post here:
cat /etc/fstab
and /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

EDIT: I am probably wrong: you have installed Gnome DT, but not using it! So this is not the problem, at all, seems. It is just as it brings services up, and down...

The other problem, I do not see anywhere in this log suspend command?

As for gnome being installed;
I installed the system starting from a live stick that first installed a gnome spin. I added the cinnamon DE later and never removed the Gnome environment.

Right, I can see the problem, LVM !
lol.

You see, in my fstab I have:
Code:
cat /etc/fstab

#
# /etc/fstab
# Created by anaconda on Sun Dec 15 15:59:09 2013
#
# Accessible filesystems, by reference, are maintained under '/dev/disk'
# See man pages fstab(5), findfs(8), mount(8) and/or blkid(8) for more info
#
UUID=78ae8dcb-94c4-4c40-a6c7-6991bf669c25 /                       ext4    defaults        1 1
UUID=b9934d46-7981-4f52-aeeb-d7b837aa8c15 swap                    swap    defaults        0 0
then in my /boot/grub2/grub.cfg I have:
Code:
linux /boot/vmlinuz-4.9.13-201.fc25.x86_64 root=UUID=78ae8dcb-94c4-4c40-a6c7-6991bf669c25 ro rd.lvm=0 rd.dm=0 rd.md.uuid=ffe6a725:75b260ed:7965eedf:1fa2bb75 rd.md.uuid=88477c5d:5d8f3852:a8057b88:b8b24da2 vconsole.keymap=us rd.luks=0 vconsole.font=latarcyrheb-sun16 rhgb quiet LANG=en_US.UTF-8 resume=UUID=b9934d46-7981-4f52-aeeb-d7b837aa8c15
Soo, what is missing from your box, is the "resume=UUID=......(insert here UUID of swap space)"

So, we need to find out if your swap has a UUID, or if the resume=..... part of the boot, can contain just an LVM name.

So I will need you to try and execute
Code:
blkid /dev/mapper/fedora_sysadmin-swap
and see if you can find out the UUID of it.

example, in my box:
Code:
fdisk -l
Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/md126p1 2048 16283647 16281600 7.8G 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/md126p2 * 16283648 180226047 163942400 78.2G 83 Linux
/dev/md126p3 180228096 1000226815 819998720 391G 83 Linux

[root@bobx ~]# blkid /dev/md126p1
/dev/md126p1: UUID="b9934d46-7981-4f52-aeeb-d7b837aa8c15" TYPE="swap" PARTUUID="f37501a1-01"
And that UUID (of the swap space), is the one needed in the boot command
and you would do this by adding this (in my case I added: resume=UUID=b9934d46-7981-4f52-aeeb-d7b837aa8c15
to the /etc/default/grub file, in the line called:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX
then I executed: grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub
and then I rebooted.

I did exactly that and the problem is still the same;
I added the uuid of my swap to the /etc/default/grub file.
ran grub2-mkconfig
ran reboot
logged in and hit suspend.
when it was down I hit the powerbutton and let it come back on.
the screen stayed dark as before. as if it is not powered.
