after that, I am at a loss, only thing that would then occur to me is that the laptop itself switches off the screen as some sort of power management. Did you also try the laptop screen buttons ? luminosity ?
One thing that would be interesting is, since the laptop is actually on, and you can ssh in,
when it comes back from hibernate/suspend with the black screen, try hitting CTRL-ALT-F2, and log in as root, and see if you are actually logged into the Console, by checking with "w" from the other comp when you ssh in. i.e. to determine if's only a screen issue, or the keyboard also gets locked up.
