Another FF annoyance?

Inspired by this thread -> http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=313586
...
I can't seem to make Thunderbird recognize anything but Firefox as the default browser. I've been using Vivaldi for about 6 weeks (it's pretty good these days), but when I try to use a link from Thunderbird, only FF comes up. I made sure Vivaldi was the default (using the "check-on-startup facility), but after I shut it down and bring it back up, it tells me it's not the default. Using System settings to set Konq doesn't do it either. A search in Thunderbird for something akin to "default browser" came up empty too.

I went to the Vivaldi forums and found an old thread claiming that the "set Vivaldi as default" switch was buggy, but that doesn't explain why I can't set anything but FF as default.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

Thanks, antikythera. There's a lot there. A quick read-through makes me optimistic that the answer is there, but it'll have to wait until tomorrow before I give it a try. Right now I'm collecting ZZZZZzzzzzzzsssss.
