latest kernel installed but no initramfs created

Hello,

I did an update today to install the latest linux kernel (4.9.14.200).
After restarting the system the grub boot menu did not show the kernel.
I run dnf update again and again there was the option to install the kernel.
I does install it again.
Again restart. Again no kernel 4.9.14.

My os: fedora workstation 25 64bit KDE remix.

Output of
Code:
rpm -q kernel
kernel-4.9.13-200.fc25.x86_64
kernel-4.9.13-201.fc25.x86_64
kernel-4.9.14-200.fc25.x86_64
A few days I did a upgrade from f24 to f25.
I use the guide on https://www.if-not-true-then-false.com

best regards,

Spinni

Re: latest kernel installed but no initramfs created

Could you run these commands and post the results here?
Code:
uname -r
ls /boot/ | egrep "init|vmlinuz"
sudo egrep "default|menuentry" /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg
NOTE: If you are not using UEFI install, then change the grub.cfg file path in the last command to:

/boot/grub2/grub.cfg

Question: I installed the nvidia driver as described here :
There I does both
Code:
grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg
Was this wrong?

Beside this the nvidia installer failed the first time registering the kernel with dkms.

Yesterday I tried to install the nvidia driver again and this time no error.

Hmm ... I am really confused

Re: latest kernel installed but no initramfs created

Code:
initramfs-kernel-4.9.14-200.fc25.x86_64
This is not right. It should not have the name "kernel" in the filename. Look at the filenames of the other installed kernel initramfs* files. There is no corresponding vmlinuz* file for that kernel either. And yes, there is no 4.9.14-200.fc25 kernel listed in your grub menu.

What method did you use to "upgrade the kernel"?

A simple "sudo dnf upgrade kernel*" should do it.

With XP installed, I would assume you might be booting in MSDOS MBR BIOS mode and not UEFI, so /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg would not be correct in that case. To check which mode you boot into, do:
Code:
ls /sys/firmware/
If you do not see an "efi" directory entry, then /boot/grub2/grub.cfg is your correct grub config file location. If the "efi" directory is there, then /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg is your correct grub config file location. Grub will only look in one or the other, not both locations.

You should delete the /boot/initramfs-kernel-4.9.14-200.fc25.x86_64 file. It's possible its presence is tripping up grubby, which is responsible for adding and removing kernel entries from the grub.cfg file. I suspect you did something to manually generate this file yourself. And while you're at it, might as well zap "initramfs-4.9.6-100.fc24.x86_64_old.img" file as well, as it' useless.

Also, post output of:
Code:
sudo df -h /boot
This is to check the size and disk space usage of /boot. If it's a separate partition, perhaps it's too small.

Re: latest kernel installed but no initramfs created

Hello

Sorry for the 3 posts. I did not read that a moderator need to unlock the post.

I did use dnf update to install the kernel.

Code:
df -h /boot
/dev/sdb1       531M    172M  321M   35% /boot

ls /sys/firmware/
acpi  dmi  memmap
I am confused.
Today my system tells me that I got updates.
Then I open a terminal as super user.
Type in
Code:
dnf update
and the system tells me there are no updates.
Only after a clean all the new updates are visible.

How can I tell my system to create the vmlinuz-image?

Can I delete the
Code:
/boot/efi/EFI/fedora
folder?

thanks for your help

regards,

Spinni

Re: latest kernel installed but no initramfs created

Hello again,

Some other question.
I do remove the 4.9.14 kernel file and the old 4.9.6 file.

Then I want to see

Code:
ls -lZ

Re: latest kernel installed but no initramfs created

You should not delete the /boot/efi/EFI/fedora folder. That directory path and the files contained in it are created by the shim package.
Code:
rpm -ql shim
/boot/efi/EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI
/boot/efi/EFI/BOOT/fallback.efi
/boot/efi/EFI/fedora/BOOT.CSV
/boot/efi/EFI/fedora/MokManager.efi
/boot/efi/EFI/fedora/shim-fedora.efi
/boot/efi/EFI/fedora/shim.efi
But when booting in BIOS mode (not UEFI) files in those directories are not used. You should be looking at the grub.cfg file in /boot/grub2/grub.cfg.

So check again in correct grub.cfg file:
Code:
# grep 4.9.14-200 /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
You keep saying that the 4.9.14 kernel gets installed. What does rpm have to say?
Code:
$ rpm -q kernel-{core,modules}
Did you delete the initramfs-kernel-4.9.14-200.fc25.x86_64 file from /boot as I advised? You can't "generate" a vmlinuz file. That needs to be "installed" by the kernel-core package.
Code:
$ rpm -qf /boot/vmlinuz-4.9.14-200.fc25.x86_64
kernel-core-4.9.14-200.fc25.x86_64
dnf has a timer that prevents it from rechecking for updates for a specified period of time. You can overrided that timer by using the --refresh option.
Code:
# dnf check-update --refresh

Hello,

Still no entry in the grub2.cfg

Code:
rpm -q kernel-{core,modules}
kernel-core-4.9.13-200.fc25.x86_64
kernel-core-4.9.13-201.fc25.x86_64

kernel-modules-4.9.13-201.fc25.x86_64
kernel-modules-4.9.14-200.fc25.x86_64
I delete the files you told me.

Re: latest kernel installed but no initramfs created

OK, let's try this. As root, edit your /etc/default/grub file.

Change the GRUB_DEFAULT= line from "saved" to 0 (zero)

GRUB_DEFAULT=0

Edit or add the line GRUB_DISABLE_SUBMENU= to this

GRUB_DISABLE_SUBMENU="true"

Then run this:
Code:
# grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
Then reboot.

Re: latest kernel installed but no initramfs created

And please post again:
Code:
$ ls /boot/
If that still gives no joy, then try the following:
Code:
# dnf reinstall kernel-core-4.9.14-200.fc25.x86_64 kernel-modules-4.9.14-200.fc25.x86_64
And lets check the permissions of your /boot and /grub2 directories,
Code:
$ ls -ld /boot
$ ls -ld /boot/grub2
Should look like:
Code:
dr-xr-xr-x. 6 root root 4096 Mar 19 10:25 /boot
drwxr-xr-x. 6 root root 4096 Mar 19 10:25 /boot/grub2
